Pool Comps & Open Water Events (Archived

Many Yarra Roughies members participate in pool and open water competitions. Swimming together with club members makes pool competitions and open water events more enjoyable, especially for people taking part for the first time! There is always representation of mixed abilities and experience to share the fun with.

Pool Competitions

Pool competitions are generally run by Masters Swimming Victoria, Masters Swimming Australia, or a local masters swimming club. Competitions are long course (50m pools) or short course (25m pools). Events are mostly held in Greater Melbourne but there are also interstate competitions.

Masters pool competitions are low stress, well-run timed events that help you achieve your personal swim goals. You’ll compete alongside swimmers of all ages and experience, swimming with others who have nominated similar times for the race you’ve entered.

The club often nominates a few competitions each season that members who wish to compete can enter, and go along with other members from the club.

You must be a member of Masters Swimming Victoria to enter any pool competition.

Open Water Events

Open water events are often run by local Surf Lifesaving Clubs. They run primarily over summer and usually have a classic distance of 1.2km, with many also offering longer or shorter distances. 

These events are well run, safe events. Start times for each event are staggered with swimmers of similar ages starting together (and sometimes separated by gender).

At the start of each Open Water Season, the club nominates half a dozen events that members who are interested in participating in, can enter. At these events, the club:

  • Organises car pooling for anyone requiring transport,
  • Sets up a sun shelter and flag for members to gather at.
  • Sets up a chat group for attendees and event day coordination via the members-only TEAMAPP site

You do not need to be a member of Masters Swimming Victoria to enter Ocean events.
