Event Commencement

During the Swim

Time Cycles
  • Time cycles are 1:30, 1:40, 1:50, 2:00, 2.15 and 2.30. Depending on numbers for each time cycle, there may be two-time cycles sharing a lane.
  • The preference is for all swimmers to swim freestyle. It is recommended that each lane swim one (1) kilometre at a time i.e. 10 x 100m. This will enable the last 100m in each kilometer to be a stroke, other than freestyle, a drill or another choice.
  • We have allowed for a two-minute break after every odd kilometre(1, 3, 5 etc) and a five minute break after every even kilometre (2, 4, 6 etc) for a rest, toilet breaks, food and drink.
  • Time cycles and break duration are at the discretion of each lane. Please respectfully discuss this with the other people in the lane before you commence each kilometre being mindful of everyones needs, for example, toilet breaks, food and rest.
Lane etiquette
  • You are unlikely to know the capabilities of others in your lane. Please be patient.
  • Allow five seconds between swimmer. In the event you’re regularly catching the person in front (e.g. can touch toes) consider switching the order at the end of each 100m e.g. when you finish each 100m please consider letting through faster swimmers after they touch the wall.
  • Try to share the leading of lane. They may look capable and fast, but it is nice to give them a break too.
  • Should you feel that you are in the wrong lane you can move up or down lanes. Remember that 12 in a lane is getting cosy and it is preferable not to exceed this number. Instead, you may wish to wear fins or use a pull buoy.
  • The event is a challenge, albeit a fun one. Everyone will have a different goal. For this reason, you are allowed to use pull buoys, fins, paddles and snorkels.
Snacks and drinks
  • There will be club members on the pool deck helping hand out snacks and refill water bottles.
  • If you need your water bottle refilled, please signal to one of the volunteers, or you can do this in the breaks – there are filtered water fountains on the pool deck.
  • There will be fruit and lollies available at the end of the lanes. We also encourage you to bring your own fuel to have at the end of the lanes should you prefer something different.
  • Vegan and gluten-free options, and non-dairy milk will be available.
Safety
  • If at any time you feel unwell, please stop swimming and signal to a lifeguard or club member that you need assistance.
  • Whilst this is a challenge, we do want you to swim within your limits.
Photographs and privacy
  • We will be taking photos throughout the event. Should you not wish your photo to be posted on social media, please let us know.

Event Completion

  • Once you have completed your swim, there will be refreshments, including a selection of baked goods, fruit, tea and coffee in the Registration area. This will be available from 9am.
  • Make sure you check whether you have won a raffle prize (which will be drawn whilst you are swimming)
  • You are welcome to stop swimming at anytime during the 10 kilometres. There is no requirement to complete the 10 kilometres. You should set your own target. Please check off with a club member on deck when you step out of the pool.
  • The lanes are returned to public use gradually (given the different time cycles) until the event finishes at 1.00pm. You are welcome to continue to use the public lanes after they are handed back. (we expect all lanes (on the different time cycles) to have finished within five hours).
