Frequently Asked Questions
> I am not a Yarra Roughies or Masters Swimming club member, can I enter?
Yes! All swimmers 18 and over are welcome to enter; you do not need to be a member of the Yarra Roughies, or any other Masters Swimming club.
> What is the 100 x 100m event?
The Yarra Roughies 100x100m is a non-competitive, “fun-durance” swimming event. It is a chance for swimmers of all levels to test their endurance in a relaxed environment. Entrants swim up to 10km in 100m intervals, at a self-nominated pace.
> Where does it take place?
The 100x100m is held at the Fitzroy Swimming Pool, the home of the Roughies, which is a 50m outdoor swimming pool. Make sure you bring sunscreen!
> What does the entry fee cover?
The entry fee covers event entry, pool entry, event swimming cap, and refreshments.
> How do I nominate my pace?
Your pace (known as a time cycle), is the amount of time you have to swim each 100m. A time which will allow 10-15sec between each 100m should be a suitable choice – there are no prizes for speed in the 100x100m! You select your time cycle when you enter the Event on Eventbrite.
> What happens at the event?
On the morning of the swim, registered swimmers will sign in and receive an event swimming cap. Entrants then head to the lane assigned to them (lanes are assigned by time cycle). The 100 x 100m are divided into 10 blocks of 10 x 100m. These blocks are separated by breaks.
> What are the breaks?
After each odd km (1km, 3km, 5km etc.), lanes take a 2 minute break for refuelling and/or bathroom breaks. After each even km (2km, 4km etc.), lanes take a longer break of 5 minutes.
> Which strokes can I swim?
Any – freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke are all fine!
> Can I use swimming equipment?
Yes. Fins, pull buoys, snorkels and paddles are all permitted.
> Can I change to a slower / faster lane once I start swimming?
If requested, the Yarra Roughies team will try their best to accommodate changes during the event. You can adjust your selected time cycle on your booking any time up to the day before the event.
> Do I have to swim the whole100 x 100m?
No. Enjoyment is the priority for this event and you may choose a shorter distance if want or need to. You can decide on the day, and even change your mind once you’re in the pool. You may surprise yourself by swimming longer!
> How do I stay fueled during the swim?
Light snacks such as jellies and fruit will be available at the end of each lane during the event for a quick energy boost. Our volunteers will aim to keep your water bottle topped up as you swim. The 5-minute breaks between each 10 x 100m block provide time to eat something more substantial if desired.
> Can my family/ friends attend??
Yes! They are welcome to enter the event, or simply turn up as a spectator. Please note, though, that the pool may charge a spectator fee.
> I can’t swim but would like to help out, can I get involved?
Yes! We would be extremely grateful for any time you can spare to help the event run successfully. If you are available and would like to volunteer, please email yarraroughies@live.com with the subject line “Volunteer 100x100m”.
